VSI Episode 26

turkeys lurking

Original Website Blurb (November 2011)

Yesterday was gorgeous, the kind of 60-degree November day that makes you glad to live in a Southern state.  I sat on my porch, drinking a Hell's Belle (brewed here in NC), when I realized from the freshness date printed on the side of the label that July August September October November in acronym form spells JASON...

Somewhat more relevant, I got to thinking ecology, and how that ties into our cultural traditions of harvest festivals and giving thanks for our food.  North Carolina is both an agricultural state and a hunting state (though both traditions are declining rapidly as the state adds population and urbanizes).  That few minutes on the porch spawned the weird mix of topics in today's show.

You'll notice some honking.  That was not my impression of a wild turkey.  That was Chloe chewing on her favorite pink squeaky dragon toy, Scorby, before I threw her out into the yard so I could work in peace.

For now, I'm reposting episodes of my first podcast, VSI: Variation Selection Inheritance, a show about evolution in all its forms. That includes life, culture, and technology, examined through interviews with experts, reviews of pop science and pop culture, and my own individual rantings.
This show was made possible by the National Science Foundation, through the BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action.
